Windows Phone Help (Free) [Growing Apps]

Windows Phone Help is just a great tool to discover the functionalities of your Windows Phone. If you remember Windows Phone Insider that we reviewed in February, the idea is the same, but the execution is more focused on content here.No fancy icons, but more text and more content. The app has a lot of hints and how-tos that can be used by the n00bs and by the veteran alike.You can search what you need help on or you can browse by category.

Want to geotag your pictures? Check. Use voice commands? Check. Handle Error C101C401 when buying an app? Check. Mark multiple emails as read or reduce your battery consumption? Check and check.

The list of hints goes on and on: there are more than 100 hints in the app.

An innovative function is the “There’s an app for that” section. Apps are suggested for common uses like how do I use Facebook or Craigslist or use the Compass? This list will tell you what is the best app on the marketplace for it.

We liked Windows Phone Help, a lot. The content could be expanded to even more basic and advanced functions, but the idea is clear and the execution sharp – tap it to your WP7 no problem.

Wiki Panda (Free)

WikiPanda is a Wikipedia client for your Windows Phone. Search a topic on the home screen, see the results on a full window browser that uses the more bandwidth-savvy mobile Wikipedia web site. Once on the topic, you can select the content in the available languages, quickly browse through sections or related categories. Back on the home screen, your recent search are saved and quickly tap-able. The featured and on this day sections from the Wikipedia home page are also available. Overall WikiPanda is a simple but effective client for the free web encyclopedia, one of the best we tried for WP7.

I’m Here ($0.99, Trial)

I’m Here, is a useful location service app: wait for the GPS to pick up your position and the app will pinpoint it on the Bing map. Tap on the address arrow and your geo-location is translated into a street address. Now you can send an SMS/MMS, Email or post to Facebook what your position is (you can also include a print screen of the map). This is useful when you want to give indication to your friends, family – or your customers if you are a real estate agent for example – where they can reach you. The app is somewhat similar to Foursquare or Facebook Places, but it differs in not focusing on places around you, but simply on your position; giving a more practical (and useful) twist to the check-in apps category. I’m Here has a free trial, so you can try it before you buy it.

Amazon Kindle for Windows Phone 7

Amazon Kindle (Free – in app purchase) – released on 1/5/2010

Kindle is now on Windows Phone 7. Reading on a smartphone is probably at his best here, especially if you have a gorgeous screen like the Samsung LG or a very big screen like the HTC HD7.
Kindle has an in-app marketplace: to purchase books (and access previews or excerpts) the app uses the Amazon web site inside an app window. Don’t worry if it sounds clumsy, though: most of the time you will spend on this app will be reading, and reading on Kindle is good. Yeah the pages are short and it’s not the same as a book or as a bigger device, but the phone is the most portable device you have in your pocket and using Kindle will give you an opportunity to read more.

NBA Scores Lite and WordBook Dictionary for WP7

NBA Scores Lite (Free)

Just like pointed out by the word Lite in the title, this is an essential app. See the scores of NBA games on WP7: today’s and yesterday’s: that is it. Well, mostly: other features are high level game stats (Pts by quarter, Pts/Reb/Ast per player) and tomorrow’s games list with TV times. There is also live tile update, which would be super-cool if you could select a team (rather than a single game at a time).
This app delivers what it promises: NBA scores, no more, no less. It’s free (well it’s actually Ads Funded with small text ads) fast and effective. If you follow the hoops, this app is for you.

WordBook Dictionary ($2.99, Trial)

WordBook is a simple but complete dictionary for Windows Phone 7. You can search for an English word or select your recent or favorite words. A list of random words pops up at start up, making the dictionary also enjoyable as a past time (shake the phone to get new words: good idea to make this fun!)
WordBook offers a catalog of more than 200,000 definitions; when a word is selected, definition, links to synonym/antonym and thesaurus are displayed. The spelling is also available in form of an audio recording.
If you are looking for a dictionary WordBook, is a solid choice on WP7. The Free Trial shows only words starting with M, giving you a good idea of the final product – try and tap it.
